With piracy activities becoming more rampant, maritime surveillance has gained importance for the SAF in safeguarding the nation’s interests. DSTA presented several solutions for commanders to maximise the surveillance capabilities and information update rates using different types of platforms.

As there was no commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution available, the DSTA team leveraged in-house infrastructure to conduct operational research and simulation studies in complex defence capabilities. After conducting a full analysis of surveillance evaluation using different types of air platforms, the team developed a simulation tool which uses different shades of colours to represent the frequency of surveillance in a particular area. With this man-machine interface using colours, the simulation tool allows DSTA to determine different flight patterns and derive the most efficient way to survey an area. These statistical runs are then provided to the SAF, optimising the number of platform resources required and aiding the SAF in decision making.
