Minister for Finance Mr Heng Swee Keat officiated the launching ceremony of the Republic of Singapore Navy’s (RSN) seventh Littoral Mission Vessel (LMV), Dauntless, at ST Engineering’s Benoi Shipyard on 18 August 2018. The LMV was launched by Mrs Heng Hwee Nee, wife of Mr Heng.

On the launch of Dauntless, Mr Heng commented: “Naming this LMV Dauntless aptly reflects the RSN’s determined spirit to overcome all adversity without fear, capturing also the attributes of our founding generation. The Dauntless spirit will continue to guide the RSN in innovating and constantly improving itself, to safeguard Singapore.”

He also highlighted how the rapid operationalisation of the LMVs is truly remarkable given the short period. “I would like to take this opportunity to commend the RSN, DSTA and ST Engineering for today’s milestone in our LMV journey,” he said.

DSTA manages the LMV programme, including the design and construction of the ship, and is the overall systems integrator as well. Working closely with the RSN and ST Engineering, the team designed and delivered a smarter, faster, and mission-flexible ship, with increased capabilities and endurance to undertake a wider spectrum of operations.

DSTA’s Senior Engineer (Naval Systems) Magdalene Ho is part of the team that develops innovative solutions to streamline workflows, reduce manning, and enhance the LMV’s combat capabilities. For Magdalene, her happiest moments at work are marking the milestones in the LMV programme. “Beyond just celebrating our progress and achievements, I am heartened and motivated when I receive feedback from the ship’s crew on how our technological innovations made a difference to the defence and security of Singapore,” she said.

The launch of Dauntless is a significant milestone in the RSN’s continued transformation to keep Singapore’s waters safe. Three LMVs – RSS Independence, RSS Sovereignty, and RSS Unity – were commissioned in 2017. Two previously launched LMVs – Justice and Indomitable will be commissioned later this year. Fortitude, the sixth LMV, is presently undergoing sea trials.
