Research and Development

DSTA's mandate is to be a smart, aggressive technology seeker with a strong appetite for the latest technologies that will contribute to the transformation of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) into a third generation fighting force. Our research managers are expected to be proactive, multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary so that DSTA has the flexibility to keep up with, and even beat ever-changing technology trends.

By venturing outside the confines of the office, meeting and exchanging ideas with local R&D establishments, and quirky and brilliant people all over the world, DSTA identifies the right transformational technologies, plots technology roadmaps, and makes technologies real by inserting them into actual applications to meet future operational needs.

As Defence Minister Mr Teo Chee Hean highlighted in a Straits Times interview to mark SAF Day 2006, it was the work of the defence scientists and engineers that gave SAF systems and weapons the special edge. DSTA looks to grow the right technological capabilities in Singapore so that the SAF continuously maintains this unique edge. As the Chinese saying goes, "it takes 100 years to cultivate a person." Similarly, our work in defence R&D is a long-term commitment, and a fulfilling but challenging task that requires patience as well as careful planning.

Our search for technologies spans a wide spectrum. We are always on the lookout for the latest advances in areas such as electronics, human sciences, signal processing, communications, and many, many more.
