DSTA wins Defence Technology Prize 2003
DSTA clinched three out of eight prestigious DTP awards given out this year. The teams are: the Integrated Protection Engineering Team, the Datalink Network Program Team and the Enterprise Command & Control Information System Team.
All three teams won the DTP Engineering (Team) Award for providing innovative solutions that effectively enhance the defence and security of Singapore.
They received their trophies from the Minister for Defence, RAdm (NS) Teo Chee Hean, at the DTP Award Ceremony held at the Nanyang Technological University. They also received certificates of commendation from Chief Defence Scientist, Prof Lui Pao Chuen.

Collaborating with strategic partners to develop PC games for our soldiers
DSTA and the SAF are collaborating with the US-based Institute for Creative Technologies to develop customised games with good training value for our soldiers. A Singapore version of the Full Spectrum Command (a game used by the US Army) as well as the Full Spectrum Leader, are now being developed to hone the combat skills of our company and platoon commanders respectively.

The results of a study by DSTA's DMRI in comparing the oral and facial skin temperatures of febrile and afebrile persons at rest, validated the measurement functions of the GlowCard. The slim measuring device launched by InfoWave takes only six seconds to measure a person's temperature on his forehead.

Setting up a joint research laboratory in France
As a testament of the strong relations between Singapore and France, DSTA, NUS, ONERA - leading aerospace research agency in France and Supélec, a prominent French university, have set up a a joint research laboratory in France. The laboratory will conduct basic, scientific research in the areas that are of interest to defence and security.
A MOU signing ceremony for the establishment of the joint laboratory was held on 30 May 2003. The ceremony was witnessed by Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, RAdm(NS) Teo Chee Hean, and French Defence Minister, Her Excellency, Mrs Michele Alliot Marie.

Two Different Thermal Scanning Systems at Changi Airport
Heat detectors used to detect fever- a symptom of Sars, are becoming more commonplace. The thermal scanners used at Changi Airport, jointly developed by DSTA and ST Electronics, are unique in that the system uses a military thermal imager to measure temperatures. Anyone with a higher than normal pre-set temperature will appear red on the system's moniter screen.

IFSS - a useful contribution in national effort against SARS
The Infrared Fever Screening System (IFSS), developed by DSTA and ST Electronics, is a good demonstration of the build-up of capabilities which can be harnessed and adapted to provide innovative solutions beyond the military sector. To date, three more IFSSs are now deployed at Singapore Cruise Centre and Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to screen sea passengers. Combating SARS with new Infrared Fever Sensing System
Jointly developed by DSTA and ST Electronics, the Infrared Fever Sensing System (IFSS) uses thermal imaging sensor technologies to measure the temperatures of passengers unobtrusively. Serving as the first line of screening for arriving passengers, the IFSS is now in operation at Singapore Changi Airport.

DSTA's DMRI has been working with the SGH's pathological laboratories to develop a diagnostics kit to identify the SARS virus. Genome Institute of Singapore and DSO National Laboratories are also part of the research team.

DSTA's DMRI, Genome Institute of Singapore and DSO National Laboratories are working together to develop a diagnostics kit that will quickly and accurately detect SARS. More than 65 researchers are participating in this research, in support of the pathological team at the Singapore General Hospital.
Using respiratory extracts from patients, the researchers are investigating into the genetic sequencing of the virus.

Strengthening Singapore's defence science and technology R&D
Jointly established by DSTA and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Temasek Laboratories at NTU is testament of DSTA's continual efforts to collaborate with stategic partners to harness science and technology for national defence and security. Temasek Laboratories at NTU is the second such collaboration with the local universities. DSTA also set up Temasek Laboratories at the National University of Singapore on September 6, 2000.

DSTA, programme manager for the Republic of Singapore Navy Frigate programme, facilitated the technology transfer from France to Singapore to enable Singapore Technologies (ST) Marine to build five of the six frigates. The keel laying ceremony for the first locally-built frigate was held at the ST Marine shipyard on 8 Mar 2003.
