Collaboration
Collaboration is a key MINDEF strategy to harness technology to meet the needs of the SAF. Collaboration expands our science and technology capacity. Cooperation brings mutual benefit. By working together with our partners, we shorten lead time and reduce the cost of bringing technology to meet military needs.
DSTA has established an extensive network of collaborative linkages with technologically advanced defence agencies around the world, from North America to Europe to the Asia Pacific.
DSTA engages its technology partners in areas of mutual interests across a broad spectrum of areas, from human sciences to unmanned systems, from advanced materials to chemical, biological and radiological research. Cooperation takes the form of information exchange, joint research and development and attachment of scientists and engineers in each other's laboratories.
DSTA also taps the growing scientific and engineering capacity in Singapore to undertake projects in front-end, non-classified research. We collaborate with research institutes and centres under the Agency for Science, Technology And Research as well as the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. We have set up Temasek Laboratories in NUS (i.e., TL@NUS) and NTU (i.e., TL@NTU) to focus research efforts on defence needs. Among the key areas are aeronautics and electromagnetics.
Research through our collaborative links complements the work undertaken by DSO National Laboratories (DSO). As MINDEF's research and development arm, DSO undertakes classified research through funding from DSTA.
DSTA is at the heart of the defence technology ecosystem that has been built up over the years to meet the SAF's growing technology needs. Apart from the technology agencies in Singapore and overseas, DSTA also partners the local defence industry, particularly ST Engineering, to ensure that capabilities which are of critical importance to MINDEF are built up and maintained. These capabilities cover maintenance and engineering support for SAF's equipment, development and production of new weapon systems as well as enhancement and modification to existing weapon systems to meet the SAF's unique needs.
