02 Dec 2009 DSTA Chief Executive receives Honorary Fellowship Award

DSTA Chief Executive Soh Kong Pheng and former DSTA Chief Executive Richard Lim were among five Singaporeans who received the Honorary Fellowship Award at the Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO). The award is presented to individuals who have attained outstanding achievements in the field of engineering.

18 Nov 2009 DSTA integrates HIMARS into the Third Generation SAF

The High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) is the SAF's latest weapons system acquisition from the US. DSTA engineers are upgrading the weapon system's nerve centre to plug HIMARS into the Third Generation SAF's high-tech battle network.

30 Oct 2009 Defence Technology Prize 2009

Two individual and five team winners received the prestigious Defence Technology Prize (DTP) 2009 from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Mr Teo Chee Hean on Friday, 30 October 2009. The DTP is awarded to defence scientists, engineers and technologists who have made notable contributions towards Singapore's defence science capabilities.

The five winning teams are the Advanced Antenna Team, the Advaced Radar Team, the Infocomm Security Team, the Mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Team and the Countermine Vehicle Team. DSTA was represented in the Mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Team and the Countermine Vehicle Team.

23 Sep 2009 Former DSTA engineer profiled in inaugural Digital Life Successful Developers Awards

Former DSTA engineer Chiang Chee Meng was among 26 software developers profiled in the inaugural Digital Life Successful Developers Awards for developing an automated electronic notification system to inform NSmen of their in-camp training. Mr Chiang said it was talk by a DSTA member during his undergraduate days that opened his eyes to how algorithms can solve real-life problems. His first job as a DSTA engineer helped cut his teeth in writing software. Mr Chiang is currently an assistant principal engineer in ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems).

19 Sep 2009 Former chief defence scientist key in setting up DSTA and developing Underground Ammunition Facility

Former chief defence scientist Professor Lui Pao Chuen is a pioneer in the development of science and technology in Singapore. Prof Lui was a key player in setting up DSTA. He provided guidance to the DSTA team that developed the Underground Ammunition Facility, which proved that it was feasible for land-scarce Singapore to tap underground space. In this interview, Prof Lui talks about why Singapore needs more people specialising in physics.

15 Sep 2009 DSTA enhances the SAF’s Weapon Locating Radar for Afghan deployment

DSTA enhanced the capabilities of the SAF's Weapon Locating Radar (WDL) and integrated the cooling system in the operator cabin. As part of Singapore’s contribution to the multinational stabilisation and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan, the deployed WDL will provide early warning of rocket attacks and enhance force protection measures for International Security Assistance Force personnel based in Tarin Kowt.

14 Sep 2009 DSTA to conduct Windows 7 feasibility study

DSTA plans to conduct a S$500,000 feasibility study to look into the potential of the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. The Microsoft Windows 7 operating system features a host of improvements from the current Windows Vista, including multi-touch support, a new taskbar and enhanced networking functionality.

03 Sep 2009 DSTA co-develops Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicle

DSTA worked closely with the Army and Singapore Technologies Kinetics in the design of the indigenous Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicle (ICV). These include integrating the Battlefield Management System to link and network the Terrex ICV with commanders and other SAF assets. A closed-hatch driving system was also designed by DSTA to enhance crew protection during operations. Other features include the weapon detection system, remote control weapons station and all-round surveillance system.

Participants from DSTA attended the Defence Management Systems Course (DMSC) held from 13 to 30 April 2009. Besides participants from government ministries and organizations in the defence ecosystem, many foreign participants were invited for the first time to examine defence and technology-related concepts, challenges and skills.

DSTA's Deputy Chief Executive (Operations) Tan Peng Yam was on the expert evaluation panel that recommended 16 research teams to receive funding from the National Research Foundation. This expert panel evaluated the proposals based on their commercial viability.

09 Aug 2009 DSTA helps its staff go through challenging times

DSTA's management and staff pitched in to help a fellow colleague whose baby, the eldest of quardruplets, was born prematurely. Besides allowing him flexible work hours, DSTA raised over $20,000 from its staff to help pay the hospital bills. The family of six recounts those challenging days as they celebrate National Day in 2009.

DSTA was instrumental in contributing to a successful National Day Parade 2009. 08 Aug 2009 DSTA jointly developed Singapore's first self-propelled howitzer

DSTA, Singapore Technologies Kinetics and the Singapore Armed Forces worked together over six years to develop Singapore’s first indigenous Self-Propelled Howitzer – the Primus, which can be seen in the Total Defence Display at the National Day Parade 2009.

DSTA worked closely with the RSN to refurbish the Archer-class submarines, originally designed to operate in the cold Baltic Sea, for the higher temperature and salinity of Singapore's tropical waters.

DSTA and DSO National Laboratories (DSO) awarded 115 scholarships at the DSTA-DSO Scholarship Award Ceremony held on 23 July 2009 at Orchard Hotel. Director (DSTA Masterplanning and Systems Architecting) Dr Yeoh Lean Weng received the Fellow Award at the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) for his contributions in designing large-scale communications systems for the Singapore Armed Forces. Dr Yeoh is the second individual in Asia to receive this award. He received the award from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean at the INCOSE 19th annual international symposium held in Suntec Exhibition and Convention Centre on 20 July.

09 Jun 2009 DSTA in joint-development for the ACMS

DSTA jointly developed the Advanced Combat Man System (ACMS) with the SAF and ST Electronics, with support from ST Kinetics. The ACMS is a system that combines computers, sensors and communication devices into a configuration compact enough for individual soldiers. The SAF awarded the $100 million contract to ST Electronics, to supply the ACMS to the SAF by 2012.

12 May 2009 DSTA to invest in infocomm technology

DSTA announced several infocommunication technology (ICT) initiatives at this year's IDA "Business Opportunities for Infocomm in the Public Sector" conference. DSTA plans to develop its next-generation content and information management systems, and to explore the feasibility of utilising the yet-to-be-released Windows 7 operating system for local defence needs. 06 Apr 2009 DSTA documents Singapore's geology

DSTA recently launched the second edition of "Geology of Singapore", incorporating geological information gathered since the first edition was published in 1976. Led by Dr Zhou Yingxin, a senior principal engineer at DSTA, his team of 10 geologists and researchers compiled the information into a publication, that will be very relevant to local construction and urban planning experts.

31 Mar 2009 DSTA part of E2C replacement programme

The Republic of Singapore Air Force received its first of four Gulfstream 550 Airborne Early Warning (G550-AEW) aircraft on 19 February 2009, as replacements for the aging E-2C Hawkeye. DSTA was the programme manager for the acquisition of the G550-AEW, and also participated in the 2001 upgrade of the E-2C.

12 Feb 2009 DSTA's very own lauded for defence contributions

As the Individual Award recipient of the Defence Technology Prize 2008, Mr Pang Chung Khiang was no stranger to innovation. In his dual-role as a Systems Architect and Director (Air Systems), Mr Pang oversaw the management and acquisition of new air platforms for the SAF, such as the F-15SG fighter jets.
